Gunson Street Party: One Night, One Laneway, Free Entry

Some of the best things in this city happen in places you’d normally walk straight past. On Friday 30 October, Gunson Street is one of them.

Gunson Street Party is back for a night, and this year the laneway is getting the colour, rhythm and spirit of Día de los Muertos to welcome spooky season. Think glowing festoon lights, live music, street food, local makers and Latin dancing. And it’s completely free.

The details

  • When: Friday 30 October, 4pm-9pm

The music

The lineup leans soul, groove and feel-good: Trav Collins, Solomon & Naomi, Leni and the always-electric Nahlla. It’s the kind of bill that suits a laneway, close enough to feel it and with room to dance if you’re brave enough.

Warm up your hips

Come early for the Latin dance lessons (sponsored by Tryp Hotel) at sunset, led by local instructors. It’s a good way to ease into the night, and no experience is needed. Once the lights are glowing, you’ll be ready to keep going.

Makers, artists and a few surprises

Gunson Street is full of local creatives this year:

  • The Mill brings market stalls and artists.

  • Mindshift has a Mini Escape Room for some interactive fun.

  • Interim Studios are throwing open their garage doors to show merch and studio records from local artists.

What to eat and drink

Come hungry. Tryp Hotel is serving up flavours of its own, and there are vibrant Mexican bites and hearty paella from Paella Man. Mr Mario is also serving his famous burgers and fish straight from his pop-up garage door. Somewhere House will be pouring drinks all evening, so you can sip, listen or dance the night away.

Make it your Friday night plan

Start at 4pm and wander, or turn up at sunset for the dancing and stay for the music. Either way, it’s a rare chance to see a hidden pocket of the city fully lit up, and you can do it for free.

Just don’t forget to register first.
